Our hearts have been hurting for Hawaii, specifically those affected by the fires on Maui. A few days after the fire, I was in the studio planning to work on new SYML songs, but what came out instead was this short piano piece. I remember learning the meaning of “lament” when I was a young piano student, an expression of sorrow. Music has been used in this way for thousands of years. This piece for me represents a dark and slow rolling ocean, with a distant beacon pulsing in the distance. The profound sadness, for me, is that the beacon is meant to signal danger and keep people safe, but in this case there is no one left to hear or see it.

I am fortunate to have a history of working in Hawaii with some amazing Hawaiian artists, and my family has loved every visit to the islands. It’s a place full of history and magic, which I know will heal over time, but for now it’s ok for there to just be sorrow. - Brian
